little j cooks

little j is always interested in helping out in the kitchen. She loves to measure, stir, bake. I think she'll be a good cook in the near future. On Saturday as I made up our weekly menu and shopping list, I asked little j if she wanted to cook dinner this week. She did, and from her own Rachel Ray cookbook, she chose tomato alphabet soup and quesadillas.

Now, I won't begin to tell you how difficult it is to find alphabet letter pasta, but I tracked some down at World Market. When the Js arrived home little j decided that she would rather watch Arthur. Who am I to disagree? So we watched the end of Arthur then headed into the kitchen to start dinner. little j did almost everything by herself: she grated the cheese and assembled the quesadillas, got the soup in the pot, cooked the noodles, put the noodles in the soup after I drained them, flipped the quesadillas, and set the table.

Gourmet? No. But delicious and hearty and a good meal for a 5 1/2 year old.
